Established to honour the memory of our friend, MARGARET CAIN, and to provide funds for the Indigenous people of northern South Australia, people who Margaret held in high esteem.
In 1979, Margaret went to Ernabella as a State Education Department teacher. Here Margaret experienced a different world, learning much from the people of the Pitjantjatjara Lands and making important friendships.
It was Margaret’s vision during her time in Ernabella that led to the establishment of the Wiltja Project in 1980. Through this program indigenous students came to Adelaide to Ingle Farm High School to complete their secondary schooling. A number of these students went on to undertake teaching qualifications at the University of South Australia. This was a source of great joy to Margaret. The Wiltja Program has since grown significantly and now provides school and out-of-school education for Anangu students from two groups of Anangu schools (in the north west of SA on Pitjantjatjara lands and on the west coast of SA near Maralinga Tjarutja lands.), as well as students from Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Students attend Woodville High School and live at the Wiltja Residence which can house up to 63 students.
The Margaret Cain Memorial Fund, in collaboration with the NPY Women’s Council in the Northern Territory will direct funds to indigenous people to encourage them to further their education, follow their passion, and reach their potential. These were desires Margaret held dear.
You are invited to donate (PDF) to the Fund in honour of Margaret, to support a cause that was dear to her heart.
